There are colorful tins of wax medium sitting on my sister’s kitchen island, next to a few sketchbooks and a medley of PIGMENT BARS and WAX printmaking bars. It’s my makeshift mini studio while I’m visiting the fam in Hawaii.

I created these because I wanted a satin matte finish in my paintings. I’ve been playing with the formula for over a year, and this is the result.

It’s semi soft. Satiny. Matte. It lifts cold out of the tin and spreads like thick frosting with a palette knife, and it’s loaded with pigment, so it lays down rich, vibrant color.

I filmed the whole beautiful mess of mixing the new wax medium, blending it with the WAX printmaking bars and PIGMENT BARS. Working a palette knife through the paints to a butter-smooth consistency, then swatching the colors in a mixed media sketchbook.

NEW: MIX + MELT WAX Medium Confetti Cakes

It’s a hybrid of everything I love.

• Soft enough to mix with a palette knife
• Warm it, and it melts and brushes like paint
• Mix it into a PIGMENT BAR or a little oil paint to stretch the color
• Layer it down as a resist under acrylic
• Make marks over my handcrafted watercolors
• Blend with oil paint or oil paint sticks to add a matte satin finish

Each tin starts with a single base color, then gets topped with a confetti of wax bits, metallic flakes, and pigment fragments.
